On July 8th, 1863, Elisha Hunt Rhodes of the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers created a diary entry about witnessing the battle of Gettysburg between the Confederates and the Union. Giving a detailed account of the days when the battle began to when it ended, Rhodes created a valuable primary source of information that brings lots of questions to mind; what were the duties of a soldier? What were the living conditions? What was the price of being a soldier?
With these questions, I hope to be able to understand the battle at Gettysburg better, and as a whole understand the Civil War better.
INTU's:
- What were the causes of the Civil War?
- What would have been gained for either side?
- What was the price of being a soldier? Was it worth it?
Looks good. Perhaps more INTU's as you go along. Your essential question Did the Civil War solve the problems that caused it should always be at the forefront of the investigation.
ReplyDeleteMight try to examine other first hand accounts of battles and the feelings of the individuals who witnessed them. Not necessarily primary but other sources that discuss the issue.
